Roger Brooke Taney was a Maryland lawyer, state senator, and leader of the state's Federalists. President Andrew Jackson appointed him Secretary of the Treasury during his struggle with the Bank of the United States. In 1836 Taney was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He sustained fugitive slave laws, most notably in the Drew Scott decision. The letters to Wm. M. Beall of Frederick, Md. mainly concern visits to Frederick and other news. In an 1836 letter, Taney acknowledges Beall's letter of congratulation on his appointment as Chief Justice.
